A consultation which had put 2,700 jobs at risk at British Steel will not continue, it has been confirmed.

The company, which is now under government control, has withdrawn the paperwork submitted to the Department of Business and Trade by its previous management in March.

Officials said the move was part of ongoing efforts to stabilise production and followed the confirmation of a secure supply of raw materials for the site.

Lisa Coulson, interim chief commercial officer, said it had been a "difficult and worrying time for staff and their families" and the redundancy consultation would close "without action".

Ms Coulson thanked trade unions for their "professionalism and support" and she praised the workforce for its "extraordinary dedication".

She added: "It is your hard work and passion that means steelmaking in Scunthorpe has a bright future.

"Quite simply, British Steel workers are the finest in the world."

What's being announced? No compulsory job losses at all? If so, that's foolish. We've at least got the option of being a large scale commercial steel producer now, but there's a long way to go. What we don't want is an expensive Keynesian job creation scheme, even in North Lincolnshire. I think it's going to be pretty hard to argue for no job losses here if the final plan for eg Grangemouth ends up with significant overall losses, as indeed happened at Port Talbot.

For the record my hate for Labour is because the way they have run our local council. My MP happens to be David Lammy, the foreign secretary, who happens to be invisible in our area, which is among the most deprived in the whole of the country. Just recently the Greens won a previously safe Labour council seat at a recent by-election.

My first vote was for the old SDP, then when they merged to form the Lib Dems, and I voted for them and since became a member. But now I feel a little disilusioned with them too. I would do anything to vote Starmer and his bastards out!!

As for the "Full of Shit Nev" jibe, I can take it, because one can't reach people who hate you on a computer screen.

I suspect this is either (a) specifically designed to agitate, or (b) in reality has always been the case. Anyone even half informed and half reasonable knows Farage is a sexist, racist, homophobic, chronically lazy, hypocritical greed-driven grifter. He’s an arsehole, and his tiny handful of MPs are all self-interested arseholes. And he’s also so insecure he can’t lead a real party but has to have a Ltd. company so he can’t be ousted. He’d obviously be laughably shit in any sort of official role, and his sole real appeal is - like his idol Trump - he’d make life immeasurably worse for people his supporters hate.

So who is it you don’t like, Nev? The gays? The foreigns? The disabled? The poor? Women not knowing their place? Or is it you’re just another chronically insecure type so terrified by their own inadequacies and so incapable of addressing them that they can’t bear the thought of others having a level playing field?
