Literally the reason a TV show becoming good is known as "Growing The Beard", the opposite of "Jumping The Shark".

(From Season2, Commander Riker has grown a beard. This coincided with a general increase in the overall quality of the show. Thus, you can generally tell if it's worth the 45 minutes if Johnathan Frakes' chin can't be seen. If nothing else, it serves as a reminder of what a brilliant political strategist and thinker we lost when he stepped down as PM. I'd take Blair as PM today in an instant.
