If it ever was worthwhile having a system of bestowing “honour” on people to reward prominence and public service, it no longer is. Under the current Johnson/Truss/Sunak iteration of the Conservative Party, it has become so debased and devalued as to be completely worthless and quite irrelevant.

If King Chaz really wants to leave his mark, he could do worse than moving to have it scrapped.

I am in favour of honours, I think recognition by the country of good deeds is fine. It is devalued though when I see backwoodsmen Tory MPs getting knighted for “political service” and Kevin Sinfield* still has not officially become Sir Kevin after all he has achieved.

* A Rugby League footballer m’lud considered to be the most complete player of his generation who since retiring has raised many millions of pounds for the Motor Neurone Association after his team mate Rob Burrow was diagnosed with the disease
