Hunt has announced that his budget is going to be on 6 March, which is a little early, and it has triggered speculation that Sunak might go to the country in early May.

There’s also talk of some big giveaway gestures, or attempted bribes, such as the abolition of inheritance tax (yet again) and a revival of the “help to buy” scheme.

Logically, it has to be spring. They won't risk going to the wire and it's going to be harder for them to GOTV than us. We'll brave storm and tempest whereas the electors they need are likely to see it's raining and stay at home.

Emily Maitlis reckons Sunak won't go to the polls before October 24th as his ego won't be happy with less than two years in post. I suspect that the amount of taxpayer's money he can direct his family's way would be a bigger motivator for him. That said, I think it'll be May as the longer he leaves it, the worse the defeat, so his backbenchers will force to go sooner.
